About Us

Glasgow University Labour Club is one of the oldest Labour Clubs in the UK and is the biggest party political society on campus.  Former members have included John Smith, Donald Dewar, Wendy Alexander and Margaret Curran and several other Westminster and Holyrood parliamentarians. We are affiliated to and share the aims and values of the Labour Party. We campaign for the Party during elections as well as run our own autonomous campaigns on campus and through Scottish Labour Students.

We are an affiliated organisation of Glasgow University SRC.  We are also affiliated to Scottish Labour Students and Labour Students at a national level and our members often play a very active role in both organisations.

Weekly Meetings

Glasgow University Labour Club holds weekly meetings on Friday evenings either in the QMU or the GUU.  Check the Events section of the site for information on upcoming events. Recent events have included guest speaker meetings with Margaret Curran MSP,  Ann McKechin MP, The Rt Hon John Reid MP and others. We have also had various social events such as Christmas Social, new members drinks with Ken Macintosh MSP, Scottish Parliament Reception and a Glasgow City Chambers Reception as well as Pizza and Policy Forums.

We have a full programme of events planned for the new term including Fresher’s Week events, debates, guest speaker meetings, trips to national events, curry nights, film nights and much more.

Equality

The Labour Club runs an active Women’s Campaign and has a dedicated Women’s Officer, elected annually by female members of the Club.  As part of Scottish Labour Students we participate in the Women’s Campaign, BME (Black Minority Ethnic) Campaign, Disabled Students and LGBT (Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender) Campaign.

Equality is at the core of what the Labour movement stands for and is an important aspect of Glasgow Labour Club’s aims and values.

Honorary Vice President, Mascot & Club Song

Our current Vice President is Craig Martin (pictured right).  Craig is a former student at Glasgow University and Chaired the Labour Club 2004/05.  Presently he is a Councillor on Falkirk Council and Chair of Scottish Young Labour.

The Club Mascot this year is Pakora – admittedly an unusual choice!  Throughout the 2007 Scottish Parliament and Local Government Election Campaign Scottish Labour Students were found eating pakora at various campaign shops around the country.  So much so that parkora and curry was our staple diet for the campaign…

Another feature of the campaign was The Battlebus which took to and from the key marginals.  Take That’s Never Forget on the Battlebus stereo was a regular feature on these trips.  Therefore we voted it as our Club Song 2007/08!
